Got sick?

So today I went into the office feeling a bit sick, but it was an inside job so it wasn't so bad. I worked on countdown and was about to pull stuff when I started not being able to see, which, as one could imagine, scared the crap out of me. Apparently, the pressure caused by my sinuses were so bad that they were causing me to blackout. Anyways, I rushed to the doctor and then home -- never made it to classes -- and will finish the countdown probably tonight or tomorrow after school and newspaper writing. Oh well. Neil and Steve were really nice to me and seemed concerned. Never gets boring, does it? haha. I guess I won't be attending my last event on Thursday because I haven't begun the recovery process yet and I do have medicine to take!

Event today

So I went to an event today at Broadway Mall for a NY Islanders store thing. It was a lot of fun because we were all joking around and having fun, we had pretzels (at different times), and I even met the goalie (Rick DiPietro) who was there to do autographs.

This is my second to last event to do as I officially finished my internship, with the exception of morning show production every week :] I'm glad they still want me to stay. I didn't go in this morning because I had a lot of crap to do for school and such, and next semester I'll be coming in whenever I need and really running the show by writing out the words and everything. I'm testing it out this week with writing everything myself. Whoohoo!

Break's So Close!

So I came in again this morning and I'm working on some cuts. It was a little hard waking up to come to the station, but I did it! After this, it's ALL about break :)

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Bleh

I was supposed to go to an event yesterday but I couldn't because my grandpa needed me to take him to the doctor and that was very important to do.

I'm currently at the radio station right now taking notes down on some public speaking stuff, and then I think I may be done. Can't wait til it's closer to the end of the day, and I really can't wait until tomorrow!

Client Party

So all the interns (or the ones that are left) got together and we helped out at the MANDATORY event on Thursday, which was the client party. Everyone invited got to participate in the "casino" which, if you won a lot, you got raffles and could possibly win a prize or something. I don't know -- we were all signing people in and giving them nametags. The nametags later were a lot of fun to do because we made crazy ones for ourself, including "Chris King" for me (who sadly quit the other day). Another intern was "Bill Brown" and another "Joe Cosmo." We enjoyed ourselves. And then we even got to dance a bit later.

Events

So last week it was cold and rainy and crappy but we went to pathmark for Island Harvest. It was better because of Erin and Heather.

Today is the client party. Dressing up.

Next Monday is Island Harvest part dux.

Oof

This waking up at 5:30 or so is starting to kill me a bit. I'm forgetting how to stay used to it! Not cool, man. I need my cappuccino.

Yesterday

I went to the radio station yesterday and did a lot of promotions stuff -- white board, labeling, and then I was looking up tree lightings for all different towns on Long Island. It got me so excited. I LOVE this season.

Sick

Yesterday I didnt go into the office for the morning show because I wasnt feeling well. I have to go in today to drop stuff off though and work on morning show stuff tonight.

Monday, November 9, 2009

Exhausted. Times 1000infinity.

Holy crap. Today. was. stressful.

So I got to the station later on than usual because of serious deadlines and responsibilities and such. And then I go to promotions to see if they need help with anything, which they do. Driving. Oh boy.

So I drove all around my decently local area today which included lots of circles, and considering I was working on very little sleep I finally had to call it quits because I couldn't handle it anymore.

It was to promote Star Wars though which is really cool, I think. I just don't feel well at all right now... I don't know how I'm going to make it tomorrow.

:'(

Work today. Blah!

At the station

So yesterday I didn't come into the office because I was at an Advisory Board meeting for the School of Journalism. It was a great experience.

Today I came in nice and early as always on a Tuesday morning. I spoke with Steve Harper a bit about what to do with the morning show countdown, and I also did some work on the side for Neil. I even got to speak to some of the people who won contests on the radio, which was something I never did before and it was quite cool.

I also did westwoods.

It was a pretty good day at the office, I kept busy for most of it and I love the crew from the morning show.

Oh yeah

So I went to the event the other day that I was dreading and it was not so bad. Although it was a lot of physical work. We had the cash cube and the kids kept going in and out and we had to go in and fix the cash and put the pockets and glasses on them and the zipper barely worked so we had to push really hard or pull really hard and it hurt our fingers. It was funny joking with Justin and Chris though -- it's always fun working with them. I was lucky again and I'm sure there are pictures up but I would hardly call them funny if they are because it was a pretty boring event as far as dressing up goes. No entertaining aspects to grasp onto as the duck. Lots of kids. LOTS of kids. But I like kids so it was okay. It was a kid function after all. The place we went to was gorgeous! I can't think of the name but it was a very large and beautiful country club.

Ideas!

Okay, so...

1) A mix-mash up of the top 10 artists in a one minute segment to kick it off.
2) Tell them to go online to see tons of pictures and other fun things of their favorite artists online at the website, and that's also where they can download the mix-mash up we make if they like it
3) Before we do the first song, we can do a spin on Abott&Costello where it's like "Who's on First?" etc before we introduce the Number 1 song
4) We can do a sort of contest before we do the Top 10 Countdown where if someone names 5 or 6 or 7 out of the 10 artists, they win a KJOY Prize Pack or a cd from each of the artists they named or something like that which is cool.
5) Do research on the Top 10 from the 80's up and add a clip of it like "In 1980, the 10th top placed song was... and now it's..."
6) Find out how the song came to be and who wrote it, who's the guitarist/bassist/etc of the band in case musicians are listening and would like to research it

Eh...

Ugh. Today I have an event from 5:45 to 8:30 and I am just not looking forward to it. I don't know why. I have to be there around 4, 4:30 though which does not help my happiness with the situation. I have to dress up and can't wear jeans or sneakers which is equally as annoying. I'd much rather stay at home and do homework and think of stuff to do for the morning show.

Which reminds me. I need to think up some cool features to add to that. Hmm...

Organization is Crucial in Show Biz

Okay so yesterday sort of felt like I was doing the same thing. Not literally, but figuratively because it was somewhat clerical. I went into Studio D and all I did really was organize CD after CD, DAT tape after DAT tape, etc and it was a little hectic. But in the end the cabinets looked quite nice and I considered it a job well done. Here is a before and after shot of one cabinet filled with lots of DAT tapes.

What was also pretty cool was the fact that the new morning show host, Steve, and his producer who I work with every Tuesday morning, Neil, asked me if I wanted to be like a producer for a segment of their radio station on Saturday mornings, which is a Top 10 Countdown sort of thing. I'll plan and organize it and choose clips and other interesting features based on whatever celebrities are up on the Top 10 List. I'm pretty excited about it honestly.

Picture Alert!

Oh, and I forgot to add this photo to my radio internship blog last Tuesday so heeeere it is now. As I said, I was recording things from internet to Enco which is the sound system music stuff (I can't really describe it except it has every song or sound clip needed for the DJs to do their playlists and such). I felt pretty cool playing with the sound and the editing techniques and such.

Posted!

By the way, the blogpost I wrote for Phathead is up on the website -- woot woot!

http://lirgblogs.com/blogphathead/?p=87#more-87

Sloooooooooow

So today was seriously just clerical work -- it wasn't so bad but it felt long. I databased for hours which is basically just taking slips from contestants' entry forms and entering their emails, addresses, phone numbers, and birthdays into the computers. It was exhausting. And I was pretty parched as well haha.

After that I had to file a lot, woopdeedoo. It was a slow day for us interns but whatever. Tomorrow I have to wake up for the morning show, yaaaay!

Fail

So that event I was going to be ridiculously late to -- yeah, never got there. I tried. I was so late and I drove there anyway but I got lost to the point where they told me to just turn around and forget about it. Fail. :(

Have to go into the office today -- and then tomorrow as well. Another event on Thursday but hopefully I'll make it this time.

Error

The event today was moved up an hour (which means I'll be late an hour and a half) because of a broadcasting error. Score. :|

This Week

So yesterday I didn't go in because I had to do some major studying for philosophy midterm on Thursday, today I went in and did lots of work -- researching celebrity interviews, doing commercials, and stuffing some invitations. And tomorrow I have an event to go to from 3-5pm and then I have to study some more. Ah, what a nice eventful week ahead of me.

Thursday Madness

Yesterday I went to school and then I went to an event. It was at first torture because it was raining so hard outside and I so did not want to go anywhere in it, but I did anyways. We went to a car dealer which later on turned out to be fun because someone else working with the station and I began playing in the cars and looking at all the ridiculously cool yet unnecessary buttons just on the steering wheel alone. Getting everything set up was more work because I was in heels, as I was told to be in, and we had to walk and carry things in between cars and all around this difficulty designed building. But the event was only two hours and it went by really fast. When I got home I made dinner for James and my stepdad and my mom, and it was supposed to be also for our friend Conor, but he was unable to come after all so James and I just hung out and it was great!

Tuesday Mahnin'

We had off on Monday because of Columbus Day so I went in on Tuesday as if it were a normal week. I wrote up a blogpost for Phathead about global education (when it's posted -- I'll let you know!) and I did some research for events going on in and around Long Island. It was a pretty simple, laid back day -- they didn't have that much work for me. Tomorrow I have to go to an event for a couple of hours and then I'm playing Catan with my amazing boyfriend and his awesome best friend. Tomorrow will be a loooong (classes and work and such) but very good day, especially towards the end!

As Promised: Part 2

Then I had to go on over to a Party City and I got a little more dressed up than just being a pink duck!

As Promised: Part 1

So the first event I went to this past Saturday was a pet fair. It was so hard to be there though because there were tons of dogs and I wanted to take them all home with me. I didn't though because 1) that's illegal to steal others' pets and 2) my dog would be much less than ecstatic about the situation. But I played with them all -- through my duck suit. Except for one dog -- a doberman pincher -- he looked like he wanted to tear me to pieces. Huge stuffed animal was the only thing on his mind, you could tell.

So here are many pictures from the event; photos thanks to KJOY:

Get ready!

I have great pictures going up on Monday from the two events I did today. Three words to describe two events: Dogs and costumes.

Up and comin'!

Big weekend for radio work! 3 events in 2 days -- more than I usually do in a weekend!

Early Tuesdays

Yesterday, Tuesday, was another low key day in the office. I went in at like 6:15a and forgot my code. Neil made fun of me about that for a bit haha. Then I pretty much sat in with Phathead for the whole morning show, which was fun as always. He's a great guy -- and funny too. He does his job so well, it's incredible! The morning show crew is compiled of some pretty great people, so I love coming in during the mornings -- even if I'm not completely used to the time yet haha. I'm doing a pretty good job adjusting though. Afterwards I helped Puffy with a few commercials, and then I was on my way to school for a long but satisfying day of classes.

Monday Madness

On Monday I was late because I have some study stuff to do for school. When I was on my way however, I was faced with a ton of idiots on the road. You have to wonder how some people get their licenses... must be bribery. One 18 wheeler truck cut off a little car which blew my mind and then some jerk behind me was trying to make a lane in between my lane and the one on the right of me. I was quite annoyed by this.

When I got to the office, I wrote out 200 gift certificates for bowling which was cool because I got to sit with Puffy while I did so. He's a great guy, just like the rest of them. Joe Cosmo came over from promotions and started imitating him which was hysterically funny. Then I did some databasing, then some removal of website stuff, and then some more databasing. It was a pretty low key day.

Sunday Walk

Sorry! Been super busy. So here's the deal. On Sunday I woke up at 4:30a in Staten Island to come to Long Island for an event. Chris and I headed out to Eisenhower Park for a Breast Cancer Walk. It was pretty quiet the entire event and we only stayed for two hours or so. It was pretty funny though. I dressed up at Lucky again, of course! Not much happened during the event though as far as interaction with customers really -- we were placed decently far away.

Here are a couple of pics:

Absent

I didn't go this week to the radio internship because I had a sinus infection and my schedule for school was changed because of a holiday :(

Event Sunday morning though!

AND THEN...

This morning was a hard one for me to wake up. I had to be at the radio station by 6:30am and didn't get out of bed til 6:05am. But I am a fast waker-upper when I'm finally awake. It was just too warm for me to get out of bed! I couldn't help it!

Anyways, I got to the station and did some pulling of some clips. I felt bad I didn't remember off the top of my head, but Neil helped me out with remembering. I did tons of pulling after a while, and I actually remembered and knew what I was doing. I also started with a research project, but I don't completely remember what else I did because it was over 15 hours ago and I'm getting quite exhausted. Time to hit the hay! Or nest? What do ducks sleep in? Oh well, it doesn't matter... I need to fly south soon! (not)

Then...

On Monday I went to the office and I was seriously feeling like super intern. I cut up a lot of commercials for them, and I did SO much continuity. I was constantly putting new codes and such into the computer. I didn't have time to do databasing at all because they had me doing some very cool and interesting stuff that really affects the business and the radio on-air time head on. I was very glad with the trust they gave me, and I was also proud of how well I was doing. Puffy actually let me go home a bit early, which in turn was quite nice for my homework and my really early night sleeping yesterday. I was in bed by 9:30pm!

Shopping for Some Duck Food...

Okay, so I have some stuff to jump up on. I've been a little preoccupied with work, but here I am!

On Friday, I went to a grocery store to help one of the radio stations out. We had a prize wheel and gave away great prizes. It was fun hanging out with Nicole and Mark. I was the duck yet again, and I must say I did a pretty good job. Check it out...

And you're on the air with....

This morning show session I had for my internship was spent much differently than ever before. Instead of doing any work, I sat in on an entire morning show with the radio host, Phathead, who by the way, is AWESOME. We got along great and he's such a sweet guy; we were able to have tons of great conversations between his being on air. It was also cool to see how many buttons he was pressing and making things mesh together so well. I loved it all! It was also a very relaxing day, which I appreciated because it was after all 6:30 in the morning and I had already been up for an hour.

I really love my internship!

Another Day in the Office

Today felt to be a very long day. I went to school and then was on my way to my office hours of the radio station. I couldn't find many people because they were out to lunch so I was going to do some databasing when they all found me. I began doing some continuity for Jaime, which is basically when I make sure commercials are being aired on future dates. After that, I did some filing for productions, did a lot of databasing with a co-intern, and then did some more continuity work with Jaime, and then finished off the databasing. Everyone seemed to be in a great mood for a Monday but I think it's because everyone there loves working with everyone else there, which is a special thing to have in an office. I'm glad I was able to go there today, but I am pretty exhausted and can't wait to call it a night. I have to wake up early tomorrow morning for the morning show, but I don't feel so well.

I'm a Good Duck

So on Saturday morning, before the big poker fundraiser, I got up and went on my way to the Easter Seals Walk to help out one of the radio stations. In between my job of getting people to sign up for a chance to win free Mets tickets, Chris came to the event (Jason was with me the whole time) bringing along Lucky the Duck. I happily helped the duck shine with the little kids and adults running around before their big walk. It was exciting :)

I like being the duck most of the time because it really does bring smiles onto faces of many people, which is just such a great thing.

Aside from that, the nice people organizing the event gave me a t-shirt. The event was cool also because I learned a new way to get to Bethpage Park that I previously did not know existed whatsoever.

It was a very short event but I think it was a great one nonetheless. A lot of different organizations came together and we all gave free stuff to people before they did their work for the disabled. It was a very inspiring event, and I'm glad Lucky was there to see it.

"Welcome to 6:30am"

This morning instead of waking up around 6:30am to get ready for classes, I got up at 5:30am and got ready for the morning show work I would be doing in only an hour's time. I quickly got ready, although beyond exhausted, and was on my way to work. When I got there, I was welcomed by Neil, who works the morning show. He showed me how to pull certain clips from whole parts of the different radio stations's morning shows, and before I knew it, he left me to do it all by myself. The clips will be featured on the website, as they are always done.

After I finished that, I did some commercials. When I was done with the six or so commercials I had been given, people started showing up for their normal work days. Puffy gave me an even bigger list to do of commercials, and I gladly did them for the next hour or so until I had to head on out to go to school.

While today I was a little more tired than usual, unaccustomed to morning show hours or duties, I really had a good day. When I finished classes and a project however, I hit the sheets immediately! Now I'm off to do homework.

Next event is this upcoming Saturday morning! I'll keep you posted!

A Twist to My Duties -- Festival Event

So yesterday, aside from it being my one and a half years with my boyfriend and Labor Day, I went to a radio event at a local festival. After I arrived, we set up and then pretty much just hung out asking people to sign up for a chance to win Mets tickets. After that, we got some recordings of people saying they count on our radio station for good variety, etc. There was a twist for me though. I was the duck. Yes. THE duck. Here's a couple pictures:

Yesterday

So yesterday I had my second office experience which was nice. First I did a lot of cutting/adding/editing and creating clips of commercials to be aired, which was very cool and exciting. Then I picked special deals on the island for the yourli.com newsletter. And then I did some databasing. It seemed to go by so fast that I hardly knew how fast it really was going until it was 5:30pm and they told me I could go home. It could have also been because my first day of school was yesterday and everything was going so great.

My First Event!

So for my first event I met up with the crew at the office -- it was just me, another girl Eva, and this guy who's been working there for a while, Mark (maybe it's Marc?). Anyways, we met up there and got the supplies and then drove off to the event. Eva and Mark went into the van and I followed them because I wanted to drive my own car. It ended up being over 10 exits away, in Brookhaven or something like that, but it wasn't so bad. It was actually pretty fun.

Mark had two of his friends come, it was nice to meet them. We set up and just gave free coupons and did raffles with the people that showed up. Some got free gifts too. I was a little shy at first but I think I did alright afterward. The event was for a movie night of Hotel for Dogs, out on the lawn. The location was huge. At one point a little girl ran up to me crying hysterically because she lost her mom, but we found her mom's best friend which was equally as nice for her and she ran over there and that was it.

The crew I worked with was very nice, we made friends easily. I was supposed to do the next event with Eva, but another intern who is so ridiculously sweet and I'm so thankful for, switched my Saturday event with her Monday event so that I could stay at my dad's longer. I was very appreciative. So instead of the Mother Cabrini's Festival by the zeppole eating contest (which I have to admit does sound cool as well), I'm going to be doing an event for WMJC at Walt Whitman Mall on Monday, which is ironically my first day of classes as well. I know it'll be good because I'll be so pumped from my first day of class already.

I now also know my information for the morning show, which is good, because I really needed it. And other than that, I am ready for the internship! I think I'll be able to handle this all just fine!

My First Entry!

So, I've decided to create this blog to archive all the things that I'm going to be doing for my 13-week long internship with the Long Island Radio Group. The company, which is based on -- you guessed it -- Long Island, owns many popular radio stations including, but not limited to WMJC 94.3, B103, and KJOY 98.3.

My schedule for the internship is every Monday from 2-6pm, and every Tuesday from 6-10am. Today was my first day however, simply because I needed to meet the guy I will be working with in the mornings on Tuesday. I won't be seeing him again until after Labor Day which is when my Tuesday shift will commence. I am also required to attend one event per week to help out with. Tonight is my first event as well!

So here goes what happened today.

My shift started at 10am today, although I came in 15 minutes earlier. I parked right in front, only a few spots away, and went up the elevator only to the second floor. It seemed like a lot longer though because I have a fear of elevators that I've had since I was a little girl living in an apartment building. After I battled the fight of terror, I quickly made my wait to the office where I had a nice greeting with Jamie, one of the sweetest women I know I'll meet. I had met her on Monday at the internship orientation, along with a few other people I would be working with this semester.

Neil came out to the front and met with me, and we walked around for a little tour of where exactly I'll be going and doing when I come in for the morning shows. We sat down and he discussed a few of the most important things that I'll have to do and remember, telling me to keep in mind that sometimes it may get crazy but it's never me. I appreciated that word of advice because sometimes, I admit, I can be sensitive so it is nice to know in advance not to worry if these people I work with like me or not. As we were walking around, I met one of the radio personalities, Jim "The Big Voice Guy" O'Brien. He seems like a great guy, and someone funny too, so I hope I can work with him more as time goes on.

After that, the busy work started. First, Neil sent over a 60 second commercial for Remax's mortgage ad and I had to transcribe it. I decided to do it through typing because I type over 90 words per minute, so that's what I did. I was at Phathead's office though and when he came in, I was a little nervous I was in his way but he said I wasn't. His office was great though. He had tons of photos of his daughter and his dogs, which, I may add, were all ridiculously adorable. He seems to be quite a character and I'm excited to get a chance to work with him as well. The transcribing didn't take long at all, and the next thing I knew I was working for productions. I didn't do anything mind-blowing, but I did make a really nice and neat board of events for them for the upcoming week. When I was done with that, they decided I could do databasing -- one tedious task. For databasing, I just sat down in front of a computer and inputted all the yellow flyers they had received from one of their B103 events. It was a bunch of people trying to win a prize, giving us their information and email addresses for future reference. So there I sat, putting in email after email, name after name, address after address, and number after number. After about 100 of those, another Jamie from LIRG, along with a fellow intern, stopped me to teach me how to input commercial information for her continuity department.

They were both surprised at how fast I picked it up, the other intern that was there saying he was embarrassed that he hadn't gotten it so fast. It was all a joke though -- that Jamie seemed really nice too, and had such a strong Brooklyn accent. She's such a sweetheart. Rob, the intern who was showing me how to do the stuff on the computer for continuity, brought me to productions after I was done and we cut and edited commercials. Then we recorded them onto another computer that would later be used the following week to AIR the commercials. I felt so cool just clicking the button and watching it record.

By the time we finished that however it was almost time for me to leave, so I finished as many more database entries as I could to keep it neat and gave it back to Frank at productions. Then I was on my way.

Throughout my first day I got lost a couple of times -- only finding my way from someone finding me or hearing someone's familiar voice, like the first Jamie I had mentioned, who sits at the front desk.

Overall, it was a very productive day and I did learn a lot. It was exciting to have been giving all these chances already and met the people I met, and I can't wait to meet more of them. Now, I have to go get ready for my first event -- it's a movie event for Hotel for Dogs, which I will not be embarrassed to say was quite awesome. All those dogs? You gotta love it. I definitely do.

I'll be talking about my first event later on tonight so stay posted!
